Understanding a luxury perfume composition

Distinguish a note from a declared ingredient

A fragrance pyramid describes impressions and development, while an ingredient list serves a different informational purpose. Leather or clean linen may describe constructed accords. Do not therefore infer that every word used to present a perfume corresponds directly to one individual raw material contained within the finished product.

Read the structure as an invitation to smell

Top, heart and base notes provide a useful framework, but your experience may not follow perfectly separate stages. Look for contrasts, transitions and textural effects instead. Official descriptions help prepare a trial; they replace neither your personal perception nor the product’s ingredient information and directions for its intended use.
