Guerlain perfume, from the 1889 classics to today's collections

Guerlain perfume spans nearly two centuries of creation: classics such as Jicky, Mitsouko and Shalimar, newer lines like Mon Guerlain, and themed collections including Aqua Allegoria and L'Art & La Matière. Below are the dated landmarks, what each line offers and a sensible way to test them.

Guerlain perfume: a house founded in 1828

Guerlain was founded in Paris in 1828 by the perfumer Pierre-François Pascal Guerlain. The family ran the business until 1994, when LVMH acquired it. The Eau de Cologne Impériale earned the founder the title of official perfumer to Napoleon III.

Jean-Paul Guerlain was the last family member to lead creation. The Swiss perfumer Thierry Wasser became the house perfumer in 2008. The historic boutique stands at 68 avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris.

A Guerlain perfume therefore belongs to two timelines: an inheritance of old formulas, regularly reworked, and recent lines that the house expands every year. Community databases list more than 600 Guerlain fragrances, which shows the size of the catalogue but not how many are still sold. For current and older Guerlain perfumes alike, the official sheet remains the reference on sizes and variants on sale.

Shalimar, Mitsouko and Jicky: the classics worth knowing

Jicky, composed by Aimé Guerlain in 1889, is often cited as one of the first fragrances made with synthetic materials. References list bergamot and lavender, jasmine and rose, vanilla and tonka bean, in a style that was unisex before the word was fashionable.

Mitsouko, by Jacques Guerlain, dates from 1919. It is a fruity chypre, with peach in the heart and oakmoss in the base as its most-quoted notes. The name comes from a Japanese woman's given name, and its exact origin is still debated.

Shalimar, also by Jacques Guerlain, has been sold since 1925 according to the house, although some references give 1921 as the year of creation. The story goes that its vanilla was boosted by pouring ethylvanillin into Jicky. The name evokes Mumtaz Mahal, wife of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, and the Shalimar gardens. Bergamot opens the composition, vanilla and tonka close it. Community databases date the Shalimar eau de parfum to 1986, a reminder that the formula is not identical from one strength to another.

Alongside, L'Heure Bleue is presented by the house as the moment between day and night, and also exists in the bee bottle.

Habit Rouge, Mon Guerlain and L'Homme Idéal: newer lines

Habit Rouge is credited by the house to Jean-Paul Guerlain in 1965, a tribute to equestrian art, and described as the first amber men's fragrance. Vetiver, launched in 1959, is another masculine pillar.

Mon Guerlain, released in 2017, calls itself a manifesto of today's femininity and comes as eau de parfum, as an intense version since 2019 and as Sparkling Bouquet. La Petite Robe Noire dates from 2012 and L'Homme Idéal from 2014, according to the databases.

For a newcomer to Guerlain fragrances, these lines make a more contemporary doorway than the classics: they follow current codes with many variations, whereas the Légendaires such as Jicky or Mitsouko stay more sharply drawn.

L'Art & La Matière: Guerlain perfume at its most refined

L'Art & La Matière is presented by the house as a collection of high-end fragrances conceived as works of art, under the motto « Quand la matière se fait art ». The official page sorts them into four groups: intoxicating ambers, powerful woods, vibrant freshness and passionate flowers.

It lists 22 eaux de parfum, among them Cuir Béluga, Spiritueuse Double Vanille, Angélique Noire, Tobacco Honey, Fève Gourmande, Pêche Mirage, Cherry Oud, Oud Nude, Patchouli Paris, Vétiver Fauve, Néroli Plein Sud, Rose Barbare, Jasmin Bonheur and Joyeuse Tubéreuse. Vanille Planifolia Extrait 21 is added. Databases date Angélique Noire and Cuir Béluga to 2005, Spiritueuse Double Vanille to 2007 and Tobacco Honey to 2023, showing that the collection grows in stages.

The eaux de parfum are ranked by intensity (medium, strong or high). A name invites you to follow one material, but the announced theme does not sum up how the scent develops: smell the whole fragrance. The house offers a discovery set and personalisation on some products. The set lets you compare several eaux de parfum without buying a full bottle, and Le Flacon Sac then takes the collection's emblematic references as refills.

Aqua Allegoria: natural freshness from Guerlain

Aqua Allegoria is the eau de toilette line of the Allegoria collection, which celebrates the wonders of nature « from zenith to dusk ». The official page names Rosa Verde, Florabloom, Rosa Rossa, Nerolia Vetiver, Flora Cherrysia, Mandarine Basilic, Bergamote Calabria, Pamplelune, Herba Fresca, Pera Granita and Granada Salvia.

Two stronger Forte eaux de parfum exist, for Florabloom and Mandarine Basilic. Mandarine Basilic dates from 2007 according to databases. The line suits anyone who wants a citrus, floral or herbal stroll rather than a dense construction.

Refills are offered for 75 ml and 125 ml bottles. Because the line is built on eaux de toilette, it wears lighter and closer to the skin than the denser collections, so reapplying during the day is part of the normal use rather than a flaw.

The bee bottle, refills and engraving

The bee bottle is a visual signature of the house. It exists for L'Heure Bleue, Petit Guerlain and Jardin de l'Élysée, and can be engraved. Engraving personalises the bottle itself, not the scent, so it works as a gift detail rather than a change to the composition. Guerlain also sells refills for Shalimar, L'Heure Bleue and Aqua Allegoria, along with Le Flacon Sac, a refillable travel case.

The house says it has run a bee protection initiative since 2018, launched worldwide in 2021. That is a brand commitment; it tells you nothing about what is in the bottle. The same goes for the bottle's decoration: bees, engraving and refill cases shape the experience of owning a flacon, while only the label and the official sheet tell you what the liquid is.

Testing Guerlain perfume: method and precautions

Start with the family that attracts you: citrus with Aqua Allegoria, amber with Shalimar or Habit Rouge, woody or leathery with L'Art & La Matière. With any Guerlain perfume, take two references, smell them on a blotter and then on skin, and judge the base hours later.

Note the exact name: Shalimar exists as eau de parfum, eau de toilette, L'Essence and extrait. The regulated allergen list on the packaging helps spot a sensitive material; if in doubt, test a small patch of skin first. A simple method is to wear one reference per day for two or three days: without scents mixing on skin, you judge trail and comfort better.

Counterfeits are illegal and risky. Prices change with size and retailer, so check with the house or a recognised seller.
