Which Burberry perfume suits you: Goddess, Hero or Her?

A Burberry perfume usually comes down to three worlds: Goddess for vanilla and lavender, Hero for cedarwood, Her for gourmand red fruit. Each name hides several versions and concentrations. This is the house’s background, the compositions as the brand describes them and what can be verified about refills.

Burberry perfume: a house from 1856 with fragrances since 1981

Thomas Burberry founded the house in 1856, and the Burberry profile on Fragrantica gives 1981 for the first fragrance, Burberry for Men. The same list mentions Burberry Weekend in 1997, Burberry Brit in 2003, Body in 2011, My Burberry in 2014 and Mr. Burberry in 2016. A Burberry perfume on a shelf today belongs to a forty-year story, and the current lines are all newer than those early classics.

That community database credits some twenty perfumers, among them Michel Almairac, Mark Buxton, Francis Kurkdjian, Dominique Ropion, Olivier Polge and Jean-Marc Chaillan. It is an enthusiasts’ reference rather than an official record, so it is useful for dates but not for settling fine details.

For a Burberry perfume, Goddess, Hero and Her are the three names that dominate the counters now. What they share is a style of presentation more than a single scent family.

Burberry Goddess: three vanillas and Provence lavender

Burberry Goddess went on sale on 31 July 2023 on the brand’s site, in its stores and at selected retailers, according to the trade press. The house describes it as a gourmand aromatic fragrance built on three distinct vanillas, balanced by lavender from Provence, earthy cocoa and ginger root.

The bottle comes in 10, 30, 50 and 100 ml. Its outer casing borrows from gabardine with a gold label, and a gold medallion echoes a motif from the house archives. That packaging work shows an effort to modernise the heritage without changing its tone.

The brand’s page calls Goddess its first refillable fragrance, which makes it the reference point for everything about refills at Burberry.

Burberry Goddess versions: Intense, Parfum and Amber Vanilla

According to the brand, the range includes the original eau de parfum on the three vanillas, an Eau de Parfum Intense that deepens the base with smoky vanilla wood, a warmer and more sensual Parfum with raspberry and suede, and an Amber Vanilla Parfum that adds amber and maple syrup.

Actress Emma Mackey fronts the campaign for the Parfum. It suggests the house presents these versions as steps in intensity rather than unrelated scents.

For a shopper, the point is to spot the exact suffix. A present bought under the single name Goddess can hold a concentration or a base note the recipient has never smelled.

Burberry Hero: cedarwood in five versions

Burberry Hero is a men’s fragrance whose five versions all rest, according to the brand, on a trio of cedarwood oils. The 60 ml Elixir is the most intense, with tonka and leathery vanilla. The 100 ml Parfum leans on the cedar trio with amyris and cypriol oil, and the Parfum Intense adds a leather note in the base.

The 100 ml Eau de Parfum pairs incense and benzoin with a base of cedarwood and pine. The Eau de Toilette, energised by juniper and black pepper, is brightened with bergamot.

In its original form, a trade press report says Hero was developed by perfumer Aurélien Guichard, with juniper and black pepper on top, bergamot in the heart and cedarwood at the base. Adam Driver fronted a campaign photographed by Mario Sorrenti. The angular glass bottle is described by the brand as an abstract reading of a horse’s hoof.

Burberry Her: the fruity gourmand inspired by London

Burberry Her dates from 2018, according to specialist press. The brand presents it as a gourmand inspired by London, with amber, vanilla and jasmine in its general description.

The original eau de parfum combines crushed berries, violet and jasmine over woods and creamy amber. The eau de toilette takes a floral turn with rose, peony and a honeysuckle heart on musk and cedarwood. The Intense raises the volume with wild strawberry and orange blossom over an ambery wood, and the Elixir goes for dark red berries, jasmine, vanilla and amber.

The newer Parfum opens on cherry, passes through warm amber and ends on vanilla, in a deep-pink matte glass bottle; singer Olivia Dean fronts its campaign. Her Petals, finally, is a limited edition whose bottle holds floating pink petals.

A refillable Burberry bottle: what the brand says

The refillable Burberry bottle arrived with Goddess in 2023: the collection includes a 150 ml refill, as well as a shower gel and a body lotion. For Hero, the brand states that the 100 ml bottles can be refilled with the Parfum, Parfum Intense, Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette refills, while no refill is listed for the Elixir.

This has to be read version by version. A whole line cannot be assumed to refill, nor can a Hero refill be assumed to suit another version, because each refill is tied to a specific concentration.

Refilling lets you keep the glass and so cuts discarded packaging. The scent choice comes first, though, and refill convenience only comes second.

Eau de parfum, parfum, elixir: reading the full label

The words eau de toilette, eau de parfum, Parfum, Intense and Elixir point to different compositions inside one line. A Burberry eau de parfum will not have the same wear or colour as a Parfum or an Elixir, even if the bottle silhouette looks alike.

Write down the full name of what you tested, concentration included, and compare it with the box at checkout. This habit prevents unpleasant surprises, particularly with a gift.

The notes quoted here for any Burberry perfume come from the brand or the press. They describe an intention rather than anyone’s perception, and no staying power can be guaranteed.

Vanilla, cedar or berries: comparing before you decide

The three Burberry perfume lines do not resemble each other. Goddess bets on an aromatic vanilla lifted by lavender, Burberry Hero on cedarwood with a resinous or leathery side depending on the version, Burberry Her on red fruit and vanilla with an ambery facet.

A simple test for any Burberry perfume is to smell one version of each line on skin and wait a few hours. The vanilla of Goddess and the one in Her, for instance, do not evolve in the same way, one more lavender, the other more fruity. Note your impressions instead of relying on the name alone.

Testing and buying with care

Apply a little on the wrist, wait and return to the base. If you are prone to allergies, patch-test on a small area and read the allergen list on the packaging; if in doubt, ask a health professional.

Buy from the house or a recognised retailer. Counterfeits are illegal and may contain unchecked ingredients. A price far below the market deserves suspicion, and prices vary between sellers, so check them at the time of purchase.
